I went looking for sharks with my drone in the Saco Bay early August 2026, and found something much more moving. I was able to photograph and video this amazing school of Striped Bass, and much to my surprise and delight, the videos went viral (over 4 million views in a week). I went looking for sharks, and found something much more moving. I was inspired by Karl Ramsdell and others posting drone videos of Great White Sharks in the Saco Bay. As a resident of Saco, someone who grew up loving all things oceanic, and a photography and drone enthusiast, I was eager to spot some myself. Friday afternoon I went to Pine Point in Scarborough. I didn’t find anything but an efoil surfer (brave dude!), and ran into Karl himself, and we had a good chat. He said to try the Goosefare Brook area.
My next opportunity was Sunday morning, so I went to Bayview Beach and launched from there, hoping to spot a shark. Conditions were calm and clear. I didn’t find a shark, but what I found touched my nature-loving heart even more. I found a huge school of Striped Bass, slowly circling in a mesmerizing ball.
I was expecting sharks to crash into them at any moment, but they never showed. So I got to take the time to appreciate these beautiful fish and the amazing dance they’re doing out not far from the shore. Satisfied that I had a very special experience, I shared my photos and videos to various Facebook groups, and was happy to see so many people enjoy them too.
Monday morning I went early to look for sharks again, but the bass had something else for me: an even bigger school! this school made the first one look small, so I was left with even more awe and wonder. It seems clear enough the Striped Bass are schooling in a defensive posture with sharks in the area, but I’m neither a scientist nor much of a fisherman
